TONIGHT THE Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Sudbury continue with the lighting of the beacon on The Croft.

As you can see in our photo gallery the Sudbury beacon has been cordoned off so no one can interfere with it before the ceremony tonight.

Across the country and the Commonwealth beacons are being lit to mark the Queen's sixtieth year on the throne. The first beacon will be lit at 10.00pm

All council beacons, including the ones in Hadleigh, Lavenham and Sudbury will be lit at 10.15 pm. The Queen herself will light the final beacon at 10.30pm.

Information about the beacon lighting tradition

The tradition of beacon lighting has existed in UK for hundreds of years. As far back as 1897, beacons were lit to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. They were lit again in 1977 and 2002 to celebrate our current Queen's Silver and Golden Jubilee.
